Dean's Leadership Program

Overview

The Haub School of Business offers a co-curricular leadership development program for all SJU undergraduate students from the Haub School of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Health Professions. Dean’s Leadership Program members are actively committed to learning more about the concept of leadership broadly, while also exploring their own perspective, experience, and trajectory of leadership specifically. Students will learn a distinctively HSB and Jesuit framework of leadership that is values-based, reflective, and biased toward serving others. The program is designed to be progressive in nature, building on the skills, lessons, and experiences of the previous year(s), with increasing demands and responsibilities. The Dean’s Leadership Program directly contributes to the formation of our students and will be another distinctive feature that will distinguish the HSB and SJU from other schools and universities.

Learning objectives:

Engage in self-discovery of one’s values, purpose, strengths, and weaknesses
Engage in service to something other than oneself
Learn to identify and test assumptions regarding such constructs as leadership, success, wealth, and service
Learn to engage in reflective experimentation

Admission Criteria

All SJU first-year and second-year students can apply
Write a one-paragraph description of their definition of leadership, a one-paragraph outline of what they wish to learn about, and a one-paragraph description of how they think they would add value as a participant in the program
Interview with Program committee member
The letter of recommendation is now in the form of a Google Form. Send the Google Form link provided in the application form to your professor / mentor / faculty who will be doing your recommendation letters. Ask your faculty, mentors, or professors to submit the Google Form.

Program Requirements

All points are to be submitted via Canvas

Mandatory Objectives:
- Attend two workshops in the spring semester, one of which will be for freshmen-only. The second workshop will be one facilitated by a speaker hosted by the Dean’s Leadership Program.
- Attend an on-campus speaker presentation and write a 2-page reflection paper on what you learned.
- Participate in a meaningful service event and write a 2-page reflection paper on what you learned.
- Meet with your assigned Junior mentor.
- Attend the New Member Celebration Ceremony/Holiday Party.
You are required to complete at least two objectives listed below:
- Volunteer at SJU-sponsored event/activity (especially a DLP-hosted event)
- Attend the mentor/mentee match-up events
- Attend a social/networking event (Hall of Fame dinner, Alumni networking event, etc.)
- Attend a World Affairs Council event
- Attend luncheons/small reception/event with special guests
- Meet with a faculty mentor

Mandatory Objectives:
- Attend two workshops in the fall semester and one workshop in the spring semester. Workshops will be facilitated by a speaker hosted by the Dean’s Leadership Program.
- Attend an on-campus or off-campus speaker presentation and write a 2-page reflection paper on what you learned, once in the fall semester.
- Participate in a leadership reading group: the book will be selected and distributed around winter break, and the discussion will take place with all sophomore members, Dean Zervanos, Dean DiAngelo, and Dr. Dufresne near the end of the spring semester.
- Meet with your assigned Senior mentor at least once per semester.
- Meet with your assigned professional mentor three times throughout the spring semester.
You are required to complete at least two objectives per semester listed below:
*Note, a student may earn double-points for participating in 2 lecture/speaker, service, or volunteering activities.
- Volunteer at SJU-sponsored event/activity (especially a DLP-hosted event)
- Participate in a service event, seeking an active leadership role in some aspect thereof
- Assume position on the DLP Executive Board
- Attend a social/networking event (Welcome Back Lunch, Holiday Party, Hall of Fame Dinner, etc.)
- Attend a sophomore bonding event
- Attend a World Affairs Council event
- Attend an on-campus or off-campus speaker event
- Assist in new member recruitment and DLP marketing
- Enroll in one recommended course
- Attend luncheons/small reception/event with special guests
- Meet with a faculty mentor

- Meet with your assigned professional mentor three times throughout the spring semester.
- Serve as a mentor to one or two DLP freshmen, meeting at least once in the spring semester.
You are required to complete at least three objectives per semester listed below:
*Note, a student may earn double-points for participating in 2 lecture/speaker, service, or volunteering activities
- Volunteer at SJU-sponsored event/activity (especially a DLP-hosted event)
- Participate in a service event, seeking an active leadership role in some aspect thereof
- Assume position on the DLP Executive Board
- Attend a social/networking event (Welcome Back Lunch, Holiday Party, Hall of Fame Dinner, etc.)
- Attend a junior bonding event
- Attend a World Affairs Council event
- Attend an on-campus or off-campus speaker event
- Assist in new member recruitment and DLP marketing
- Enroll in one recommended course
- Attend luncheons/small reception/event with special guests
- Meet with a faculty mentor
All points are to be submitted via Canvas

Mandatory Objectives:
- Attend one workshop in the fall semester and two workshops (one of which will be a senior-only workshop) in the spring semester. Workshops will be facilitated by a speaker hosted by the Dean’s Leadership Program.
- Lead a workshop either independently or among a group in the spring semester.
- Serve as a mentor to one or two DLP sophomores, meeting at least once per semester.
You are required to complete at least three objectives per semester listed below:
*Note, a student may earn double-points for participating in 2 lecture/speaker, service, or volunteering activities.
- Volunteer at SJU-sponsored event/activity (especially a DLP-hosted event)
- Participate in a service event, seeking an active leadership role in some aspect thereof
- Assume position on the DLP Executive Board
- Attend a social/networking event *Welcome Back Lunch, Holiday Party, Hall of Fame Dinner, etc.)
- Attend a sophomore bonding event
- Attend a World Affairs Council event
- Attend an on-campus or off-campus speaker event
